Yesterday afternoon the list of nominees for this years Oscars was announced, and as per every year, we are buzzing to find out which Irish talent is in for a chance to take one home! We Irish have a good track record in terms of Oscar nods and this year looks no different!
To nobody’s surprise, Saoirse Ronan is up for Best Actress for her role in Ladybird. Although she is up against Hollywood heavyweights such as Margot Robbie (for her role in I, Tonya) and Meryl Streep (for her role in The Post), the 23 year old seems to be dazzling critics for her role as Christine, an outspoken teenager who is navigating her way towards adulthood while dealing with her troubled relationship with her mother (played by Laurie Metcalf). Saoirse has already nabbed a Golden Globe for this role, so an Oscar win doesn’t seem so unlikely. With two previous nominations under her belt, maybe this will be ‘3rd time lucky’ for the 23 year old Carlow native.
Irish animation studio Cartoon Saloon has also bagged a nomination for Best Animated Feature for The Breadwinner, although it faces competition from Disney’s Coco and Dreamwork’s Boss Baby.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, from Irish director Martin McDonagh, received 7 nominations for this year’s awards, including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Actress (Frances McDormand). Things are looking good for this film after it took home three awards at the recent 2018 Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Dublin-based Irish costume designer Consolata Boyle also received her third Oscar nomination this year for her work on ‘Victoria and Abdul’ starring Judie Dench.
Overall there seems to be a lot of buzz around this year’s Irish nominees. This year’s Oscars ceremony will be presented by Jimmy Kimmel for the second year in a row. The Oscars will take place on the 4th March.
