Quitting that boring, mundane, soul destroying regular 9-5 job is something most of us at some point have pondered. Few people actually take that leap of faith and jack it all in to achieve a better, happier life. One man who took that leap is Niall Doherty
Born and raised near Waterford City in Ireland he says he was extremely shy all the way into adulthood but was able to overcome that by taking a leap. However he explains to readers on his website “The first thing you should know is that I’m not an expert on anything. I don’t have all the answers. I’m often mistaken.”
In 2007 and after a lot of effort Niall landed an American work visa and went to live in New Orleans for three years. Why New Orleans? Well simply because his favourite basketball team played there.
“I wanted nothing more than to watch and write about them, and I was able to live that dream. Eventually I moved on from sports and became interested in personal development. I experimented with a vegetarian diet and ended up vegan (then quit). I joined Toastmasters and and won a contest. I started a website. I realised that good enough wasn’t good enough so I quit my 9-to-5 job, left New Orleans and moved back to Ireland.”
The Waterford native then spent 44 months travelling around the world without flying and visiting 37 countries along the way.
Travelling the world inevitably requires cash, and lots of it. So how does Niall support his dream lifestyle? Well he’s a self proclaimed ‘Digital Nomad’ offering his web and digital skills on a freelance basis from anywhere on the planet.
Recently Niall has produced a video documenting his life from a boring office cubicle all the way through 7 years of travelling the globe. The 5 minute clip is uplifting, inspiring and sprinkled with that classic Irish humour and as the man himself says….
“You have to take chances for your dreams to come true, because taking no risks…that’s the riskiest thing you can do”.
