Swedish actor Michael Nyqvist has passed away at the age of 56 following a battle with lung cancer. Nyqvist was born in Stockholm in 1960 and graduated from the Malmo Theatre Academy. His first big breakthrough was being cast in the film ‘Together’ in 2000.
He is best known for his role as Mikael Blomkvist in ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’, ‘The Girl Who Played with Fire’ and ‘The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest’ from Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Series. Nyqvist also appeared as a New York Russian mob boss in 2014’s John Wick alongside Keanu Reeves.
A representative for Michael Nyqvist released a statement following his death which read:
“It is with deep sadness that I can confirm that our beloved Michael, one of Sweden’s most respected and accomplished actors, has passed away quietly surrounded by family after a year long battle with lung cancer.
“Michael’s joy and passion were infectious to those who knew and loved him. His charm and charisma were undeniable, and his love for the arts was felt by all who had the pleasure of working with him.”
