DCU Students to Host 24 Hour Broadcast in Aid of SOSAD

Dublin City University’s (DCU) Media Production Society (MPS) will host their annual Christmas broadcast for the 8th year running.

This year, MPS have chosen to host the broadcast in aid of mental health charity SOSAD. SOSAD helps those affected by suicide and those with suicidal thoughts.

The award winning event takes place every December on DCU’s Glasnevin Campus. For this event to work, MPS members and DCU students alike, commit themselves to spending 24 hours in The School of Communications producing content and raising funds.

Last year, the broadcast was in aid of the Peter McVerry Trust. The Peter McVerry Trust was set up to reduce the number of homeless and the harm caused by drug misuse and social disadvantage. The society set itself a target of €5,000 but went on to raise a whopping €15,300 through fundraising and donations on the night.

Society member Carmel Kenny suggested SOSAD for this year’s broadcast as, who like many others, has been directly affected by suicide. Speaking about the charity, Carmel said “I lost my Dad to suicide when I was two years old. I’ve grown up without him in my life. I’ve seen first hand how it affects everyone left behind. SOSAD is close to my heart because I want everyone to know that they have someone to talk too and can turn to in a time of need”.

Students that involve themselves will contribute to the broadcast in many ways. There is
something for everyone, be it filming, producing, presenting, editing, creating behind the
scenes content and promoting the broadcast on social media or a little bit of everything.

Aine Lawless, head of DCUtv speaks very highly of the broadcast and student involvement. “For 24 hours our members get the chance to produce their own shows and make the
wackiest memories they’ll have in college. The best part about it is that we get to do all of
this for an amazing cause and raise some much needed funds for charities like SOSAD”.

Sponsored by Bank of Ireland, the MPS 24 Hour Broadcast runs from 9pm on Friday 1st of December to 9pm Saturday 2nd of December. To tune into this excellent event go to www.dcumps.com. Also, don’t forget to donate to help MPS reach this year’s target of €7000.
