Ajax player suffers brain damage following collapse

Ajax football club have confirmed Abdelhak Nouri has suffered ‘serious and permanent brain damage’ after he collapsed on the pitch during a pre-season in Austria.

20 year old Nouri collapsed in the 73rd minute and was attended to by medical staff then airlifted to hospital in Innsbruck.

Ajax released a statement following the tragic incident :

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to him and his loved ones in this difficult time. Nouri’s brain functions have been further examined over the last few days at a hospital in Innsbruck. The diagnosis is that a large part of his brain is no longer functioning and that the chance of recovery of these crucial brain functions is nil”

“This is most likely due to insufficient oxygen supply to the brain after the midfielder became unwell during the Ajax vs Werder Bremen match in Hippach. It is now expected Nouri will be taken to a hospital in Amsterdam in the near future for further care.”

The young midfielder is a product of the Ajax youth setup coming through the ranks to make his first team debut in September 2016 scoring a goal against Willem II.

Messages of support from the footballing world have been sent from former Ajax stars Edwin van der Sar and Robin Van Persie with the hashtag #StayStrongAppie.
